ONE ROOM CHALLENGE |WEEK 2&3|

ORC-Guest-250.png

So! I may have combined the ORC Week 2 & 3 together. I have made a fair amount of progress in the two weeks. I completed the 3D renders of the space, which really brought it all to life. I really love seeing the Tricorn Black cabinets against the Sea Salt walls. It is a really clean contrast that I love. Take a look at some of the renders below:

ORC 2.1.jpg

ORC week 2.JPG

Week 3 got a bit more hands-on. I had already removed all the cabinet doors. I then washed and lightly sanded them down just a bit. I then started the priming process. Sherwin Williams has a really great primer that is perfect for my cabinets. Especially with the oak underneath. After reading a bit about painting cabinets, apparently if you don’t prime over oak- the tannings of the oak can soak through. Aaannnd I really don’t want that.

All doors and cabinet boxes are now primed and ready to be painted this week. I am really excited to see the dark color go on. I am waiting on hardware and faucet this week as well. Once those get delivered, I will install and then the cabinet will be done. I did decide to add some really pretty marble contact paper to the bottom of both the upper and lower cabinets.

Redfin Article.JPG

I was really excited to be asked by Hannah Tan from Redfin to be featured in a recent article, “Working With an E-Designer? Here are 10 Things You Should Know”. E-Design has actually been around for a few years, but is still very new to a lot of people. She included tips from other seasoned E-Designers who gave some really great advice as well as information that explains what we as designers are looking for from the client and what the client can expect from us. Be sure to note yours truly on #9. :)

The One Room Challenge | Week 1 |

It is that time of year again- The One Room Challenge kicked off this week! If you are new to the ORC, it is a design challenge that happens every Fall and Spring. Designers select a space in their own home that they will transform in a six week period. Each Wednesday and Thursday we post our updates through blogs and Instagram. Be sure to check out the ORC website- per usual, there is some amazing talent and even more incredible transformations.

Last year I chose to tackle my home office and I am so happy with how it turned out. Although, I still haven’t found the right desk chair. Maybe I can do that during this six week period! HA.

ORC Spring 2020 | Home Office |

ORC Spring 2020 | Home Office |

This year I am going to design the least used room in our house- the LAUNDRY ROOM and a little bit of our back entry hall as well. Even though isn’t a space I love to hangout in, I would like to make it what I want. When we moved in August of 2019- it was blue and had a wall of white metal shelving. That all came down and we had it painted Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams. We also bought the black finish washer and dryer. So…it had a bit of a head start, but there is still more work to do. Here are the before photos I took earlier this week:

Here is the To-Do list:

  • Paint the cabinetry Tricorn Black from Sherwin Williams

  • Replace the Faucet

  • Add hardware to cabinets

  • Add two black floating shelves above the W/D

  • Replace rugs

  • Add artwork

  • Replace ceiling light

  • Maybe add backsplash behind sink

  • Organize bins in cabinets and on shelving

It may not sound like much, but I have never painted cabinetry before- so this will be interesting. I am also not touching the floor. I would like to replace it, but it is fine for the time being.

Here is my concept board for the space:

Isn’t she a beauty?! I am really excited to see it all come together into a space that I envisioned. Be sure to check my social media pages for updates each week and definitely check out the ORC website for your own inspiration. You will not be disappointed. See y’all next week! Let’s GOO!!!!

WEEK | 1 |

It is starting to look and feel a lot like Christmas! Especially with the snow we got here in Michigan this week.

I LOVE buying people Christmas gifts. It makes me happy to find something that I really think someone will love and then to be able to watch them open it, is a gift in-itself. This year, I decided to do 4 weeks of Christmas Gift Guides, or just really cool suggestions. Let me know if you want to see something specific, like- “Wine Lovers- Gift Guide” or, “Gift Guide for Men”? I am totally open to suggestions! Without further-ado, I give you Week 1!

MY TOP 10 ITEMS TO MAKE REMOTE LEARNING EASIER | LET'S BE HONEST, WE COULD ALL USE THE HELP

element5-digital-OyCl7Y4y0Bk-unsplash.jpg

When school ended in June, I was really praying that the long months of remote learning were behind us. But, here we are just 17 days before the first day of school. Our local school board voted earlier this week to begin our 20-21 school year remotely and will re-evaluate after the first semester. Some schools across the state of Michigan will begin face-to-face, though I am not sure how long that will last.

This is a very difficult time for so many parents as they are trying to figure out how to balance their own jobs with the addition of teaching their child(ren) in the remote or virtual capacity. I decided to put together a list of my favorite items to make remote learning just a little easier.

I know most of us aren’t teachers by trade, but our kids need us right now. We got this!

One Room Challenge | Week 6

ORC-Guest-250.png

The last couple weeks have provided many of us some time to take a step back from social media and take a collective pause to focus on what is really important. I appreciate ORC allowing us this time.

I can’t believe we are already into Week 6!! These weeks have flown by! It’s definitely GO TIME!

Since I’ve decided to hold off on the wallpaper (though, I may still do the desk and shelf wall at some point, just not sure it will be before the finish of ORC) I have finished painting the room and I have to say- I love it! I was a tad nervous that it would come off too blue, but it added a really nice brightness to the room that I didn’t know the space needed.

The next big item is the new floor install. I am hoping that can be done this week or the very latest next week. I have had all my office furniture in my Foyer and Great Room- its about time they get back to their home in the Office. haha.

I have received two of the art pieces and they are amazing! The two larger pieces should be ready to go later this week. My sister, @emilyheckerphotography designed these and they are perfect.

The pillow for the accent chair is also in- its a tad bright white, but it will still work. @thepillowcollection makes really beautiful pieces!

IMG_5483.jpg

For this next week, I will be waiting on the last few items (Desk Chair, Drapery Rod and Drapery Panels) and now that a lot of the retail places are open, I will be able to get out and start finalizing the accessory pieces to really complete the space. I am excited to see everything come together!

One Room Challenge | Week 2

ORC-Guest-250.png

Week 2!!!! Whoop! Still pretty excited about my first ORC- however, my new role as a teacher in homeschooling my 5 year old is really slowing down the entire process. Haha. Due to the current pandemic, shipping times have slowed down quite a bit, so there are quite a few items that I am still waiting on. It’s a good thing that I am able to use a few items that I already own in this design.

CONCEPT BOARD | ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

CONCEPT BOARD | ONE ROOM CHALLENGE

I currently have the desk, (2) bookshelves and the light fixture.

I am in the process of cleaning out the office and getting rid of old catalogues and price lists as pretty much all manufacturers have an online presence and everything is now digital. But, sometimes it is nice to be able to have pages to literally flip through when sourcing for clients. Oh, the good-ole days!

So, while I wait for some of the items I went ahead and put together a 3D render of the space. I LOVE it. It truly captures my style and I am so excited to see it come together! I may have a couple polls I will be running on Instagram, so be sure to follow me @mjvinteriordesign.

One Room Challenge | Week 1

I am BEYOND excited to take part in my very first One Room Challenge for Spring 2020!! If you aren’t familiar with the ORC- it is an event that happens every Spring and Fall where designers select a space in their home to transform within a 6 week period (we currently have 8 weeks due current events). The talent is both jaw-dropping and inspiring as a fellow designer. Make sure you check out the website to see where these spaces began.

Since moving into a new home this past August, I have been working on quite a few rooms at the same time- but none of them are quite finished. I decided to tackle my office in the One Room Challenge. Its a perfect office space for what I need to work in and its really perfect for my first go with the ORC. I have a few pieces that I will be reusing in the space, but I will also be adding to this as well.

Check out some of the before photos:

So, do you want to see what I have planned for this space?! Here is the concept board for my home office:

I can’t wait to get going on my own room, but it is also a really cool thing to get to know other designers and get introduced to new products and manufacturers. I will be posting every Thursday for the next 8 weeks! Be sure to check out my Instagram: @mjvinteriordesign to follow my progress! Let’s goooooo!!
